New study in the British Journal of Anaesthesia: Reusable warming blankets significantly reduce the carbon footprint
A recent study conducted at Amsterdam UMC and published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia (BJA) shows: The use of reusable warming blankets can reduce the carbon footprint per surgical procedure by up to 44%.
In an independent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), three commonly used forced-air warming blanket systems were analyzed, including the MOECK WARMING SYSTEM®. The study quantified the total CO₂ emissions per surgery, taking into account manufacturing, use, cleaning, and disposal.
Key findings
- The reusable system produces 0.67 kg CO₂-equivalent per procedure
- Single-use systems result in 1.05 kg and 1.3 kg CO₂-equivalent respectively
- The ecological “break-even point” is reached after only 5 to 9 uses
The authors emphasize: Switching to renewable electricity in both the operating theatre and reprocessing facility reduces the carbon footprint of the reusable system by up to 74 %.

Less Emissions. More Tomorrow.
The Green Zero environmental study is based on the ISO 14067 standard and analyzes the greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts of reusable MOECK WARMING SYSTEM ® blankets compared to conventional disposable blankets. Using a cradle-to-grave approach, the study examines life cycle differences to specifically support environmentally conscious product decisions and promote sustainable action.
The assessment using the ReCiPe 2016 method (version 1.08) analyses eight environmental impact categories, with a particular focus on global warming potential (GWP). Based on a functional unit of 200 uses, the reusable MOECK WARMING SYSTEM® blanket demonstrates a significantly lower GWP than conventional disposable blankets.
The results show that the GWP of the reusable blanket is at least 3.9 times lower than that of disposable alternatives and that, when compared with 53 disposable blankets, it offers a clear climatic advantage.
The present report has undergone a critical review by an independent external expert to validate both the methodology and the results. This review ensures the robustness and credibility of the findings.
